Car insurance companies are also requested to forward the policies which are lapsed so as to help in finding out whether after the cancellation those drivers had insurance from somewhere else. Police are as well using scanners which are helping to spot a car that is not insured.
Several states are coming up with legislations to limit the amount of compensation an uninsured driver can claim from others. In other words, if an accident happens and such a driver is involved they are limited to getting compensation. Since they do not have insurance for such damages if they caused it they should not be allowed to claim on others who paid for their policies.
The idea behind this legislation is that if you are not providing coverage for third parties you may cause harm how can you ask them to offer you coverage? It is a way of forcing them to consider getting a policy.
There are also devices to stop uninsured automobiles to be used on the roads again before sufficient coverage is bought. All these measures will finally be effective and the premium will go down so as to help many people get a cover for their automobiles.
A good example is the state of California where they are using a certain program to find the uninsured vehicles. The police use up to date information on insurance status of vehicles and they detect one that has no coverage. Tough measures are taken against those who are caught without a valid policy. This has lead to a decrease in the rate of uninsured vehicles from 23 to 13 percent in California.
These results have made many states use this program and it is becoming effective. Other states like Kentucky use another method whereby they call a group of drivers and ask them to prove that they have insurance. In the state of California, every week insurance companies must send information to the company that runs the program so as to get their statistics well and also to help in determining the uninsured vehicles.
Their goal is not to find out the number of the insured vehicles but they target the uninsured. If a driver is caught by a policeman without insurance and argues that he has it, he is issued a letter from the law enforcement telling him to get a policy or show proven evidence that the vehicle is insured.
Another affected state from uninsured drivers is Alabama as per 2010 report. It is thereby taking actions against such drivers like California by using collaboration systems which may help in reducing such cases. There are other collaboration systems that are effective such as those which can be used to communicate electronically instead of using database.
